Braskem partners with beauty firm to boost its eco-friendly credentials.

Braskem developed the bag with Peel Plastics.jpgThe cultivation of the sugarcane that makes up the plastic uses carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, thus giving it a negative carbon footprint.

One of the worlds largest biopolymers producers has entered the world of of the organic beauty industry, supplying its sustainable plastic bags for a range of bath salts. The move by Himalayan bath salts supplier, Buhbli Organics,to use Braskem’sbio-basedplastic is part of a drive to lower the carbon footprint of its packaging and increase its eco-friendly credentials by using bags made from a sustainable source.

I’m green bio-based polyethylene from Braskem is made from sugarcane, a renewable and sustainable product, which has been developed by the company as a substitute to conventional polyethylene. Different to traditional, oil-based plastics, the cultivation of the sugarcane that makes up the plastic uses carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, thus giving it a negative carbon footprint.

Using green polyethylene in our packaging has a meaningful impact as it contributes to lowering Buhbli’s carbon footprint, which in turn contributes to the well-being of others and the planet, said Michelle Gojkovich, co-founder of Buhbli Organics, whose Himalayan salt bags will be available in more than 1,000 US Walmart stores.

The bio-plastic bag has been developed in conjunction with Peel Plastics, a Canadian company that has been producing flexible packaging for 30 years, and it was this partnership that led Buhbli Organics to find out about Braskem’s I’m greenpolyethylene. Braskem is pleased to be offering more responsible choices to help brandsand retailers to activate their sustainability drivers and, in turn, provide more environmentally friendly packaging solutions to the marketplace,” said Joe Jankowski, from Braskem’s renewables team in North America.

As a result of the environmentally friendly materials making up the packaging, which uses Braskems Im green technology launched in 2010, for every tonne of I’m greenT Polyethylene used Buhbli Organics will isolate 3.09 tons of carbon dioxide.
