2018 marks the start of the Carlsberg plastic revolution who haveannounced a series of ground-breaking innovations including its new Snap Pack, which is set to reduce plastic waste globally by more than 1200 tonnes a year – the equivalent to 60 million plastic bags. The Snap Pack replaces the plastic wrapping used around Carlsbergs six packs with a pioneering technology that glues its cans together. A world first for the beer industry, it will reduce the amount of plastic used in traditional multi-packs by up to 76%.And it is strong enough to comfortably withstand the journey from shopping aisles back to the sanctuary of your own fridge.
Snap Pack was officially launched earlier this month, with the unveiling of a unique version of Copenhagens Little Mermaid statue made entirely from the new Snap Pack cans.Held together with glue just like the Snap Pack cans, the mermaid canstruction (pictured below) embodies is three metres high and features a rising tide of 137 kilograms of plastic representative of the amount of plastic that Carlsberg will be eliminating every hour thanks to Snap Pack.
For Simon Boas Hoffmeyer (@Simonhboas), Sustainability Director at Carlsberg Group, the statue is proof that sustainable packaging does not need to be a fairy-tale. Carlsberg beer, famous for probably being the best beer in the world is now also better for the environment.

Through SAIL22, Carlsberg Groups sustainability directive, the expectation is that the environmental impact of the productive process will be reduced significantly. While the eradication of plastic shrink-wrapping is admirable, it is just one strategic improvement Carlsberg Group wish to make.Other improvements include:
- A switch to Cradle-to-Cradle CertifiedTM silver inks on its bottle labels to improve recyclability
- A new coating on refillable glass bottles to extend their lifespan and therefore reduce their environmental footprint
- New caps which remove oxygen to make the beer taste fresher for longer
Through the manifestation of Together Towards Zero, part of SAIL22, the company holds ambitions of producing zero carbon waste and reducing its water waste to zero by 2030. To accelerate progress, Carlsberg Group have announced a strategic partnership with Plastic Change, a Danish environmental organisation. This will continue alongside the long-standing relationship with the WWF around sustainability, environmental impact and the scarcity of the worlds natural resources. The new environmentally motivated initiative will further substantiate Carlsbergs iconic global image while proliferating the message that more companies must reduce their environmental impact.
Bo ksnebjerg, Secretary General of WWF Denmark added at the launch of these iniatives: Our wildlife is drowning in plastic and the problem is unfortunately growing considerably. We therefore need to act now. We need less plastic to end up in nature. That is why we consider it huge progress that Carlsberg is now launching solutions that significantly reduce the amount of plastic in its packaging. With these new solutions, Carlsberg has taken the first big steps on the journey towards a more clean and green future.
