Haldor Topsoe and Indaba Renewable Fuels are joining forces in order to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the United States. The technology allows for Indaba’s facilities to accept a wide variety of feedstocks as well as the production of multiple low carbon Index renewable fuels.
“We are excited to provide Indaba with refining technology and catalysts as they initiate production of renewable fuels in the United States. Our HydroFlex™ solution is designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) based on renewable feedstock, with a minimal Carbon Intensity (CI score) compared to traditional petroleum aviation fuel,” says Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director, The Americas, Haldor Topsoe Inc.
Thanks to HydroFlex™ technology, refiners can transform low-value feedstocks into renewable fuels that qualify for Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) credits. The innovative HydroFlex™ process layout offers lower capital expenditure (CAPEX), but also a lower energy consumption during operation, resulting in a lower Carbon Index (CI).
The H2bridge™ hydrogen technology delivers a circular solution to refineries and biorefineries by replacing fossil feedstocks with renewable LPG or naphtha, producing renewable hydrogen, and thereby generating significant greenhouse gas emissions savings and lowering the carbon intensity of the renewable fuels produced in the HydroFlex™ unit.
Indaba Renewable Fuels LLC is a US-based waste-to-renewable fuels company that converts plant and animal oils, fats, and grease-based feedstock into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The company will use a patented and proven technology platform, which will provide the most environmentally clean and economically efficient renewable fuels production.
Currently, Indaba is building new renewable fuel refineries in both California and Missouri that will produce high grade, low carbon footprint, ultra-low sulfur “drop-in” jet fuel. Set to begin operations in 2024, these plants will set a new industry standard for sustainable fuel generation. Indaba’s mission is to offer renewable fuel solutions in a way that is environmentally clean, economically efficient and sustainable long-term.
“Topsoe aims to be recognized as the global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies by 2024. As a world leader in electrolyzers, catalysts, and technology, we are heavily engaged in developing solutions for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, chemicals, shipping and aviation. Our solutions produce essential renewable energy carriers, fuels, and chemicals of the future, such as green hydrogen, green ammonia and eMethanol. Our foundation is Topsoe’s market-leading and energy-efficient technologies to produce chemicals and fuels. Topsoe is headquartered in Denmark and serves customers around the globe. In 2020, our revenue was approximately DKK 6.2 billion, and we employ around 2,100 employees”.
